Global recognition of African arbitrators grows as Prof Kenneth Wyne Mutuma appointed to CIETAC

One of Asia’s oldest arbitral institutions, and among the world’s busiest, CIETAC has enhanced its burgeoning cross-continental cooperation with Africa by adding leading Kenyan dispute resolution practitioner Prof Kenneth Wyne Mutuma to its ranks.

Congratulations have flowed from across the African and global arbitration communities following the appointment of distinguished Kenyan legal scholar, advocate, and ADR expert Prof Kenneth Wyne Mutuma to the Panel of Arbitrators of the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC).

The appointment is another example of African legal expertise gaining greater recognition within leading global institutions, as practitioners from across the continent continue to secure influential international appointments.

Last month, Ghanaian lawyer Nania Owusu-Ankomah was elevated to a Vice President of the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA). In January, Egyptian lawyer Abdallah Hosny and Nigerian lawyer IfeOluwa Alabi joined the LCIA Secretariat as Junior Counsel. Last November, Kenyan advocate and law professor Phoebe Okowa was elected as a Member of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“This prestigious international appointment is a testament to Prof Wyne's exceptional expertise, unwavering dedication, and distinguished contribution to the development of arbitration and alternative dispute resolution,” said the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators Kenya Branch (CIArb Kenya), when sharing the news of  yesterday. “We celebrate this remarkable achievement and are confident that he will continue to make a significant impact in the international arbitration community.

An accomplished chartered arbitrator, professional mediator, certified secretary, and governance auditor, Professor Wyne has made outstanding contributions to the fields of ADR, international law, and corporate governance for nearly 25 years.

Last year, he was elected the new Chair of CIArb Kenya

He also serves as an arbitrator at the Kigali International Arbitration Centre (KIAC), as well as on panels at other prestigious arbitral forums across Africa and internationally, including the Permanent Court of Arbitration, the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration, the LCIA, Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA), Lusaka International Arbitration Centre, and Dispute Resolution Panel of the AAK.

He now joins a select global pool of professionals eligible to determine disputes administered by CIETAC, one of Asia's most influential arbitral institutions and a leading forum for the resolution of complex cross-border commercial disputes.

Over a career spanning more than two decades, Professor Wyne has established himself as one of Kenya's most respected ADR practitioners, combining academic leadership, institutional service, and practical dispute resolution experience. In a variety of positions, he has played a prominent role in strengthening the use of arbitration and ADR in Kenya and across the wider East Africa region.

His appointment to CIETAC also underlines the growing connections between the Chinese and African dispute resolution communities. As trade and investment links have deepened, so has cooperation between arbitral institutions and practitioners from both regions. CIETAC has in recent years strengthened its engagement with African arbitration centres and professional bodies, including partnership agreements, forums, and initiatives aimed at enhancing China-Africa frameworks.

For the African arbitration community, Professor Wyne's appointment to the Panel of Arbitrators for CIETAC is another notable example of one of its leading practitioners earning recognition at the highest levels of global dispute resolution.
