Long-serving Mauritius Revenue Authority counsel Yoganand Ramtohul joins Spencer West as partner

New Spencer West partner Yoganand (Yog) Ramtohul needs no introduction for anyone who’s had matters involving the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA) in recent years, says the firm, and “further strengthens the quality and ability to assist clients on all fronts” as it announced that the long-time MRA counsel had joined Spencer West Mauritius to begin September, as head of its litigation offering in Port Louis.

An LLM graduate of Nottingham Trent University, with a further LLM in Taxation Law from Queen Mary University of London, Ramtohul worked as an independent barrister in Mauritius for five years before joining the MRA as a Legal Counsel in January 2021. At the MRA he specialised in international taxation, US international taxation, and exchange of information, with the main goal to further the objectives of the MRA and assist in combatting fiscal evasion and money laundering in Mauritius.

Spencer West says Ramtohul brings from his decade-long career “a valuable understanding of both the regulatory perspective and the practical concerns faced by taxpayers and businesses when dealing with tax authorities”. 

At Spencer West, he will advise individuals, businesses and corporate clients on complex tax and commercial contentious and advisory matters, with expertise in Mauritian tax law, international taxation, transfer pricing, VAT, and customs law.

Originally established in London in 2014 as a ‘consultant model law firm’, Spencer West officially launched its full South African office in Johannesburg last November. 

The international firm had previously established a presence in East Africa with the launch of its Kenyan office in early 2024, then as reported by Africa Legal it added a Rwandan office in July 2025, In April, Spencer West South Africa announced the arrival of US-trained lawyer, financial services expert, and longtime in-house counsel Calvin Christopher as a Regulatory and Compliance partner in Johannesburg.
