US-trained lawyer and longtime in-house counsel Calvin Christopher joins Spencer West South Africa

International law firm Spencer West has further strengthened its growing African footprint with the recently announced arrival of financial services expert Calvin Christopher from Standard Chartered Bank, where he spent more than a decade in leadership roles. Calvin is now a Regulatory and Compliance partner in Johannesburg.

After more than fifteen years in a variety of in-house and senior compliance roles at leading African and international banks and financial services companies, Calvin Christopher says he is “very excited” to be joining the Spencer West community.

“Grateful for all the support, very inspired to be working with such innovative legal professionals across such a diverse international network,” shared Calvin following the recent announcement that he was now a Regulatory & Compliance partner in the Johannesburg office of Spencer West. He joined the firm in March. “Keen to continue to serve and add value across the legal and compliance landscape.”

Since 2020, Calvin served as the Chief Compliance Officer for South Africa & Southern Africa at Standard Chartered Bank, a global banking group listed on the London and Hong Kong stock exchanges, with a presence in 54 dynamic markets.

“Specialising in providing regulatory and compliance advisory services to financial services clients, Calvin supports cross-border and international corporates operating in Southern Africa, helping them minimise compliance-related losses, identify client and market opportunities, and manage the regulatory and relationship risks arising from compliance obligations,” said Spencer West in its official announcement.

Spencer West is a leading international law firm, committed to delivering exceptional legal services with core values of collaboration, entrepreneurship, and excellence. Its international footprint spans more than 20 countries, connecting clients with a network of highly experienced expert lawyers across Africa, the UK, US, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Americas, and the Caribbean. “We tailor our teams to your unique needs using our local knowledge to deliver excellence across the globe.”

Originally established in London in 2014 as a ‘consultant model law firm’, Spencer West officially launched its full South African office in Johannesburg last November.

The international firm had previously established a presence in East Africa with the launch of its Kenyan office in early 2024, then as reported by Africa Legal it added a Rwandan office in July 2025, then a new Mauritius office earlier this year

A graduate of Princeton University in the United States, with a law degree from NYU, Calvin began his career as an associate in the corporate finance and capital markets teams of New York-headquartered multinational firm Skadden, then global firm White & Case.

During his time at White & Case, Calvin was recognised for his significant pro bono contributions, including advice and assistance to Kheth’Impilo and Ark (HIV service NGOs), as the Grameen Foundation, a US-headquartered global community development microlending organisation. He first moved in-house to Absa Group in May 2010.
