Business Rescue expert and mentor Zanele Macalagh joins innovative firm Thomson Wilks as a Director

Innovative ‘new age’ South African law firm Thomson Wilks Inc has continued its recent growth with the announcement that it has added insolvency specialist and legal mentor Zanele Macalagh as a Director in its Sandton office
The addition of licensed business rescue practitioner Zanele L Macalagh as a Director in the Sandton office of Thomson Wilks Inc continues the innovative South African-based law firm’s recent growth, and bolsters its top-level expertise.
“Zanele's impressive legal expertise lies in complex dispute resolution, business rescue, and insolvency administration,” noted the firm when announcing the news on social media. “As both a Qualified Director (Institute of Directors South Africa) and a Licensed Business Rescue Practitioner, she applies board-level governance insight to restructurings that safeguard enterprise value and satisfy creditor expectations.”
A graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, Zanele was admitted to the Bar in 2015, and has been on the Master of the High Court’s panel of liquidators since 2020.
Her practice is distinguished by repeat appointments as a liquidator, and her work designing court-approved rescue plans for distressed companies. Zanele routinely drafts and argues pleadings, conducts forensic audits to uncover misappropriated assets, and develops creditor frameworks that prioritise continuity of operations.
Her recent matters include leading a forensic investigation that recovered significant funds for stakeholders and preparing a structured rescue proposal that enabled a manufacturing client to resume trading within statutory timelines.
Zanele incorporated her own legal practice, Macalagh Stanford Attorneys, in late 2019. She has also served as a Director and Head of Litigation at Bavin & Associates, as a mentor for final year black law students through her EmpowerHer and EmpowerAll mentorship programme, and is the founder of Poise Swimwear.
Thomson Wilks is an award-winning full service law firm operating out of Sandton, Cape Town, Durban, and Dubai, known for its innovation, reliability, and efficiency. In recent months it has built its medico-legal expertise with the hiring of Director Julia Penn and associate Justine Paries.
