Norton Rose Fulbright SA bolsters disputes offering with maritime expert Nick Veldman

Maritime lawyer Nick Veldman has today joined the Cape Town office of Norton Rose Fulbright, a leading global law firm, as a Director in its Shipping and Transport Litigation practice.

Nick’s arrival reflects a continued focus on strengthening the firm’s dispute resolution offering across key sectors and jurisdictions in Sub-Saharan Africa and globally.

“Nick is widely respected in the maritime legal communities for his technical skill, commercial judgment, and strategic approach to litigation,” says Brent Botha, CEO of Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa. “His appointment reinforces our position as a leader in the legal profession and enhances the strength of our Cape Town offering.”

Nick, a Recommended Lawyer for Shipping and Transport in Legal 500 in 2022-2025, was ranked as “Up and Coming” in Shipping by Chambers & Partners this year; at the forefront of his generation and helping drive the growth of that area of practice.

“Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa and its lawyers is a firm I’ve long admired for its deep sector expertise and forward-thinking approach,” he says. “I’m very excited to join the team, build on their already impressive capabilities, and contribute to its continued growth in shipping, insurance, and complex cross-border disputes.”

Nick’s practice spans subrogated recoveries, broker liability, professional indemnity claims, marine cargo losses, fine art and precious metals disputes, and high-profile cover matters involving civil unrest and shipping collisions.

He brings over a decade of experience in complex commercial, insurance, and admiralty law disputes, and has acted in proceedings before South African courts as well as international forums including the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), and the London Maritime Arbitrators Association.

Nick joins Norton Rose Fulbright South Africa from Clyde & Co, where as a Legal Director he led high-stakes litigation for leading global insurers, vessel owners, commodity traders, and government clients. Nick holds degrees in commerce and law from the University of South Africa, serves on the Executive Committee of the Maritime Law Association of South Africa, and is Secretary of its Cape Chapter.
