Ethiopian firm Taza Legal promotes former judge and law lecturer Esubalew Amare to Senior Associate

Established earlier this year by a strategic union of four successful, well-respected law firms, Taza Legal LLP helps international and domestic businesses succeed in Ethiopia. Today it announced the promotion of former judge and university law lecturer Esubalew Amare to Senior Associate at the firm

Newly promoted Senior Associate Esubalew Amare brings valuable expertise, dedication, and a commitment to continuous growth to Taza Legal LLP, said the leading Ethiopian law firm as it shared news of the internal promotion this week.

A graduate of Addis Ababa University, where he is also currently studying for a PhD in Law, Amare brings experience in the judiciary, academia, and private practice.

“Over the past ten years, I have worked for and with notable national and international organisations in the area of law,” shared Amare. “But no experience has been as educational and transformative as working at Taza Legal LLP. I look forward to continuous learning and growth as I take on this new responsibility.”

In June this year, in the first consolidation of its kind in Ethiopian legal history, Taza Legal was built from a strategic union of four leading legal practices, to meet the scale, complexity, and ambition of Ethiopia’s next chapter of economic growth.

Mesfin Tafesse & Associates, an Africa Legal Network (ALN) partner firm, joined forces with fellow Ethiopian firms Tameru Wondm Agegnehu & Partners, Mekdes & Associates. and Hanna Mulugeta Law Office, to form Taza Legal LLP.

Before the creation of Taza Legal LLP, Amare had joined Mesfin Tafesse & Associates last November, as an associate. He advises clients on corporate, investment, mergers and acquisitions, and fintech and digital finance matters.

Amare’s promotion to Senior Associate is a “well-deserved milestone”, says the firm.

Prior to joining the firm, Amare was Project Coordinator at Consortium of Ethiopian Human Rights Organisations. Earlier in his legal career, he was an Assistant Judge, Judge, then Supervising Judge across 2015-2019 at the Amhara National Regional State First Instance Court, presiding over a variety of civil cases. Amare also served for several years as a Lecturer and Researcher of Law at Debre Markos University.

With more than 100 years of combined experience in Ethiopian and international law, Taza Legal combines deep local judgement, specialist capability, and international standards to help businesses invest, operate, and grow in Ethiopia and across Africa.

As part of its creation in June, Taza Legal succeeded Mesfin Tafesse & Associates as the Ethiopian member firm of ALN, Africa's leading alliance of corporate law firms.

At last Friday’s 2026 African Legal Awards held in Johannesburg at the Wanderers Club, for the second consecutive year ALN was named African Network/Alliance of the Year, recognising its ability to provide clients with seamless cross-border legal support through deep local expertise and collaboration across Africa.
