Four practices, one future: Taza Legal launches as leading firms merge into Ethiopia’s largest law firm
In the first consolidation of its kind in Ethiopian history, a strategic union of four leading legal practices has created one of Ethiopia’s most formidable full-service firms, set to serve the nation’s rapidly expanding business and investment landscape
The formation of Taza Legal marks an important milestone as four successful, well-respected Ethiopian law firms have made a deliberate decision to come together to build something greater than anything they could individually achieve, says Mesfin Tafesse, the Managing Partner of new Ethiopian law firm Taza Legal LLP.
Mesfin Tafesse & Associates, an Africa Legal Network (ALN) partner firm, has joined forces with fellow Ethiopian firms Tameru Wondm Agegnehu & Partners, Mekdes & Associates. and Hanna Mulugeta Law Office, to form Taza Legal LLP. Tafesse says they aim to build “an enduring institution that will outlive its founders, nurture future generations of Ethiopian legal talent, and provide clients with sophisticated legal counsel delivered with depth, continuity, and international standards.”
The first consolidation of its kind in Ethiopian legal history, Taza Legal is built to meet the scale, complexity, and ambition of Ethiopia’s next chapter of economic growth.
The combination of the four Ethiopian law firms brings together decades of distinct legal expertise, with the founding partners having advised domestic and international investors, multinational corporations, financial institutions, development partners, and public sector institutions on many of Ethiopia's most significant transactions.
“Throughout its history, Ethiopian legal practice has been defined by individuals,” says Tameru Wondm Agegnehu, who will serve as the Senior Partner of the new firm. “Taza Legal is founded on a different belief: that the future belongs to institutions. By bringing exceptional lawyers together under one vision, we are building a firm that will elevate the profession, and deliver greater value and excellence to clients.”
The name Taza, notes Agegnehu, means ‘shield’ or ‘shelter’ in Amharic, and he expects the new firm to live up to its name, serving as a trusted protector of client interests as well as a platform for enduring legal excellence.
The formation of Taza Legal arrives at a significant moment for Ethiopia.
As the East African nation continues to open its financial sector, attract international investors, and pursue large-scale infrastructure and energy development, demand has grown sharply for legal counsel capable of handling cross-border transactions, sophisticated financing structures, and high-stakes disputes from within Ethiopia.
“The launch of Taza Legal is ultimately a statement of optimism,” says partner Mekdes Mezgebu. “Optimism about the opportunities ahead of us, and the role that an institutionalised legal service can play in helping businesses grow and succeed.”
Taza Legal offers clients a single point of access to corporate and commercial legal advisory, banking and finance, M&A, energy and infrastructure, mining, tax, and dispute resolution expertise; a breadth of service the founders say was historically available only through international firms operating at a distance from the Ethiopian market. For local and international businesses alike, the firm represents a credible, locally rooted alternative built on decades of institutional knowledge and client trust.
“Taza Legal is not just a firm, it is a statement of a shared participation,” says Hanna Mulugeta. “We are dedicated to inspiring and mentoring the next generation of women lawyers who are empowered to lead and shape the future of Ethiopian law.”
With more than 100 years of combined experience in Ethiopian and international law, Taza Legal combines deep local judgement, specialist capability, and international standards to help businesses invest, operate, and grow in Ethiopia and across Africa.
As part of this transition, Taza Legal succeeds Mesfin Tafesse & Associates as the Ethiopian member firm of ALN, Africa's leading alliance of corporate law firms.
“Combining deep local expertise with the strength of ALN's pan-African presence and reach, Taza Legal is well-positioned to support clients as they navigate opportunities across Ethiopia and beyond,” said ALN, as it celebrated the news today.
