Commercial property expert Ernest Maboko rejoins Bowmans as partner

Leading African law firm Bowmans has welcomed back Ernest Maboko, who began his legal career with the firm, as a partner in the Commercial Property Practice of its Johannesburg office.
The skills of commercial property lawyer Ernest Maboko are in high demand but limited supply and will serve Bowmans and its clients well in the coming years, said Bowmans Chairman and senior partner Ezra Davids as Maboko returned to the leading African law firm this month as a partner in its Johannesburg office..
“‘We are very pleased that Ernest has decided to come back to Bowmans,” said Davids of Maboko, who previously rose from candidate attorney to Senior Associate at Bowmans, before leaving the firm in 2022. “He has always demonstrated a deep commitment to excellence and has proven ability to lead complex transactions in commercial property finance and general commercial property.”
Maboko is an attorney, conveyancer, and notary.
Following a stint as Senior Legal Counsel at ABSA, a multinational banking and financial services conglomerate based in Johannesburg, he rejoined Bowmans this month as a partner in the firm’s Commercial Property Practice.
“He has a wealth of hard-to-find expertise acquired as senior legal counsel at a top South African financial institution, in addition to considerable experience in commercial property finance and general commercial property,” said Bowmans.
Maboko, who has an LLB (cum laude) from the University of South Africa, has extensive experience in property, banking and finance, and general corporate work.
His expertise spans secured lending, syndicated and bilateral finance, commercial property acquisitions and disposals, refinancing and restructuring, bespoke development finance structures and all commercial property agreements, as well as complex residential, sectional title and commercial conveyancing matters.
“Our Commercial Property Practice is enjoying good growth in the legal services market,” said Samantha Saffy, Head of that Practice at Bowmans. “To sustain this momentum, we are making sure we have the resources to maintain Bowmans’ standards of excellence, and I can’t think of anyone better to fill this role than Ernest.”
Before entering the legal profession, Maboko completed qualifications in medical, surgical, emergency, community and psychiatric nursing, and worked as a registered nurse at several hospitals in and around Johannesburg.
