Why Longevity Still Matters in the African Legal Market
While rapidly changing technologies, geopolitics, and critical minerals are regularly at the forefront of discussions about Africa nowadays, after 12 years working in the African legal market, one lesson stands above all others: longevity matters
OPINION
In today's fast-moving business environment, there is often a focus on what is new, disruptive, or trending. Yet across Africa's legal sector, I have found that lasting success is still built on something far more fundamental, trust.
When I first entered this market, I was drawn by the immense opportunity across the continent and the critical role that legal professionals play in supporting business growth, investment, and economic development. What I could not have fully appreciated at the time was the importance of relationships and the value of building them over many years.
Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of working with managing partners, general counsel, business leaders, investors, regulators, and legal practitioners across numerous African jurisdictions. Many of the people I first met professionally have become trusted colleagues, valued partners, and genuine friends.
The African legal market is unique. While every jurisdiction has its own legal framework, regulatory environment, and business culture, one common thread runs throughout the continent: people do business with people they trust.
Trust cannot be built overnight. It develops through consistency, reliability, and a genuine commitment to understanding the challenges and opportunities facing clients, firms, and legal teams. It is earned through conversations, collaborations, shared successes, and sometimes navigating difficult situations together.
During the last 12 years, I have witnessed the remarkable evolution of Africa's legal profession. Indigenous law firms have expanded their regional and international influence. Cross-border transactions have become increasingly sophisticated. Corporate legal teams have taken on more strategic roles within their organisations. The market has matured significantly, and its future has never looked brighter.
At Africa Legal, our mission has always extended beyond simply connecting clients with legal services. We believe in creating meaningful connections between people. The relationships we have built across the continent are, without question, our greatest asset.
As I reflect on this journey, I am deeply grateful to everyone who has been part of it. Every conversation, partnership, referral, and friendship has contributed to a network built on mutual respect and shared ambition for Africa's future.
The next chapter of the African legal market promises even greater growth, innovation, and opportunity. But while technology, business models, and markets will continue to evolve, I remain convinced that the foundations of long-term success will stay the same.
Relationships matter. Trust matters. And longevity matters.
After 12 years, that belief is stronger than ever.
