A Different Kind of Success: Why Switching Off Has Been the Best Business Decision I've Made

Returning to the office today after his first proper vacation in years, Africa Legal co-founder and CEO Scott Cowan reflects on busyness versus productivity, and the importance of stepping back to move forward

OPINION

There was a time when I believed being constantly available was part of being a good leader. Emails were answered within minutes, calls were returned immediately, and the laptop was never really closed. The pace was relentless, and somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that being busy meant being productive.

This break has reminded me how wrong that mindset can be.

For the first time in a very long time, I truly switched off. No emails. No checking in. No constant engagement with work. Just time to breathe, reflect, and be present. What I thought would feel uncomfortable quickly became one of the most valuable experiences I've had in years.

The world didn't stop turning. Africa Legal continued. The opportunities were still there when I came back. In fact, stepping away has given me something that months of working flat out never could, a clear head.

With an incredibly busy second half of the year ahead, that clarity couldn't have come at a better time. We're preparing for three flagship events that I'm genuinely excited about:

These events represent everything I enjoy about what we do, bringing together exceptional people, creating meaningful conversations, and building relationships that genuinely move the African legal market forward. They're the kind of projects that energise me rather than drain me.

Perhaps that's the biggest lesson I've taken away from this break.

Time away doesn't just recharge your batteries, it changes your perspective. It allows you to separate the urgent from the important. It reminds you that not every email deserves an immediate reply, not every opportunity is the right opportunity, and not every problem needs your attention.

I've spent time reflecting not only on myself but on what Africa Legal looks like moving forward.

The vision feels clearer than ever.

For years, the business operated at a thousand miles an hour. There was always another contract to chase, another idea to pursue, another story to write, another meeting to squeeze into the diary. Looking back, there was far too much noise. Noise that distracted us from what really mattered.

Today, I find myself embracing something very different.

A slower, more deliberate approach to business, the confidence to say no to work that doesn't align with our purpose, the freedom to focus on the projects that genuinely excite us and the understanding that growth isn't measured by doing more, it's measured by doing the right things, with the right people, at the right time.

Prioritising self-care isn't selfish. It's leadership.

When you give yourself permission to step back, you return stronger. You make better decisions. You become more creative. You lead with greater patience and purpose. Most importantly, you begin to appreciate what truly matters, in business and in life.

I've come back feeling lighter, wiser, and more focused than I have in a long time.

There's a renewed sense of purpose about where we're heading, but also a greater appreciation that success doesn't have to come at the expense of balance.

This feels like the beginning of a new era, one where we choose quality over quantity.

Purpose over pressure and meaning over noise.

The months ahead will be busy, there's no doubt about that, but they'll be busy for the right reasons. We'll invest our time where it creates the greatest impact, work with partners who share our values, and continue building a business that reflects not just ambition, but intention.

Sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is to leave it alone for a little while.

Because when you stop constantly looking at what's in front of you, you finally get the chance to see what's ahead.

And for me, that's the most exciting part of all.
