International arbitration rising star Toheeb Amuda promoted to Senior Associate at Aluko & Oyebode

Established in 1993, ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode is a leading firm that provides world-class legal services to local and international clients. Its commitment to developing the next generation of African legal talent was on show again this week as Toheeb Amuda has been promoted to Senior Associate

The ethos leading law firm ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode has towards developing the next generation of legal talent and leaders among the African profession and on the global stage was spotlighted again this week with the news that international arbitration rising star Toheeb Amuda has been promoted to Senior Associate.

Amuda was named Young Arbitration Practitioner of the Year at the Africa Arbitration Awards in 2024. He is an international dispute resolution lawyer with extensive experience in international, domestic, and investor-state arbitration, along with commercial litigation. Amuda advises and represents clients in disputes arising from commercial contracts, employment, construction, technology, insurance, oil and gas, joint venture and partnership disputes, media, property, civil claims, and more.

On winning Young Arbitration Practitioner of the Year, Amuda said he felt the honour acknowledged the cumulative work he’d undertaken in his career, including “acting as counsel in various high-profile cases, speaking engagements, writing articles and papers and a commitment to mentoring younger practitioners in the field”.

A law graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Amuda also holds an LLM in International Business Law from the University of London. He is an Executive Committee Member of the Lagos Court of International Arbitration - Young Arbitrators Network, and past Regional Representative in Africa for Young ICCA, the worldwide arbitration knowledge network for young practitioners and students.

Amuda, who has also been recognised as one of the Top 50 Exceptional and Outstanding Nigerian Lawyers, joined Aluko & Oyebode in late 2024.

His previous experience includes being a member of the Commercial Disputes Resolution team at Howard Kennedy LLP in London, where he worked under the supervision of leading international expert Duncan Bagshaw (who was recently appointed as a King’s Counsel); as an Arbitral Tribunal Secretary at the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA); and working as an associate at Dorothy Ufot & Co.

In a recent interview with LawWrit Journal of Law, Amuda said his “genuine and lasting interest” in arbitration was sparked by a Lagos Court of Arbitration training he attended as a law student in 2017, setting him on a path that has shaped his career.

As a rising star in international arbitration, Amuda has been involved in a wide array of commercial and investment arbitrations before or under the rules of international bodies including the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID), the LCIA, International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), Dubai International Arbitration Centre, American Arbitration Association/International Centre for Dispute Resolution, and the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.

“Coming home, my time at Aluko & Oyebode has been central to translating those experiences into tangible results for clients,” shared Amuda with LawWrit Journal of Law last month. “Working in a firm that regularly handles complex commercial and cross-border disputes has deepened my appreciation of arbitration as a strategic dispute resolution tool for multinational businesses. It has reinforced the importance of understanding the commercial context behind every dispute and aligning legal strategy with the client’s broader business objectives.”

Amuda has also represented clients in litigation before various Nigerian courts and has assisted in litigation in the courts of England and Wales. Now, as a Senior Associate at ALN Nigeria | Aluko & Oyebode, he will continue to grow his career.
