After 120 years, Ashurst set to open its first African office as it secures Ouns Lemseffer as Head of Morocco

One of the world's leading global law firms, Ashurst has been advising on African matters for more than half of its 200-year history. Now its global Africa group will have permanent ‘boots on the ground’ as the firm plans to launch a Casablanca office

The announcement of project finance and M&A expert Ouns Lemseffer as Head of Morocco is the next step in the growth of Ashurst’s longstanding Africa practice, says Lee McDonald, Global Head of Projects & Energy Transition at the global law firm.

Ouns, previously Africa Practice Leader for Capital Markets, Financial Regulatory & Structured Finance and co-head of Francophone Africa for Clifford Chance, will also act as Managing Partner of a new Casablanca office that Ashurst plans to launch.

While the firm’s Africa practice spans 120 years, and now brings together more than 150 partners and associates from across the firm’s global offices (including all practice groups and industry sectors), it will be Ashurst’s first office on the continent.

"As Africa experiences rapid population growth and sustained economic development, the continent is emerging as a key hub for businesses and investors with significant opportunities across various sectors including infrastructure, energy, financial services, technology and real estate,” says Paul Jenkins, Global CEO at Ashurst. “Expanding our offering and building on the proven track record of our established Africa practice is an exciting prospect and one which positions us to deliver even greater value to our clients as they navigate this fast-evolving market."

Ouns, who was educated in Paris and has Masters degrees in Business Law and Banking and Finance Law, brings a deep understanding of the Francophone and sub-Saharan Africa markets, says David Charlier, Co-Head of Projects & Energy Transition EMEA at Ashurst. Her expertise not only complements Ashurst’s existing capabilities, but will also be invaluable as the firm establishes a presence in Casablanca, and looks to capitalise further on the opportunities ahead.

"We are delighted to welcome Ouns to the team as we advance our ambitious growth strategy and look to open our first office on the continent”, continued David. “Over recent years, investment flows from private capital and corporates into Africa have surged, and that is only set to increase.”

"Ashurst is the perfect platform with a well-integrated global Africa group and a longstanding reputation in the region, especially in energy and infrastructure,” says Ouns. “I look forward to working with my colleagues across Paris, London and the Middle East to set up a presence in Morocco and further develop our offering in the Francophone Africa region, especially on complex and innovative transactions.”

Morocco, and Casablanca in particular, serves as a key hub for international companies doing business in Africa, said Lee McDonald, Global Head of Projects & Energy Transition, “Its buoyant renewable energy industry and emerging hydrogen market, significant infrastructure investment and relatively mature securitisation market presents considerable business opportunities. Ouns’ impressive track record and vast experience mean she is well-equipped to lead the Morocco business.”
