Striking gold: rising star mining lawyer Mbuyi Katumba joins AngloGold Ashanti as Legal Counsel
South African lawyer Mbuyi Katumba has now joined AngloGold Ashanti as Legal Counsel in Johannesburg, returning full-time to a business where he completed a secondment last year, after growing from Candidate Attorney to Senior Associate at Beech Incorporated
From cross-border disputes and fatality inquiries to office banter and shared highs and lows, talented young South African lawyer Mbuyi Katumba says the first five years of his career at Beech Incorporated have shaped the lawyer he has become, as he announced yesterday that he is joining AngloGold Ashanti as Legal Counsel.
“From coming in as a Candidate Attorney fresh out of school and knowing nothing about mining and the real legal world, I’d like to thank Warren Beech and the team at Beech Incorporated who have moulded me into the person that I am today and gave me a better foundation than I could ask for to start off my career,” he shared.
His in-house move this month follows a six-month secondment to AngloGold Ashanti last year, where he assisted the globally operating South African mining company’s Vice President: Legal Operations, Africa with litigation management, settlement negotiations and dispute resolution across African business units.
Katumba’s work as a secondee also encompassed supply-chain contracts, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, artisanal and small-scale mining projects and illegal mining advisory matters. That placement was one of three mining company secondments he had during his years at Beech Incorporated, a leading multidisciplinary law firm based in Sandton that specialises in the mining, natural resources, energy, and infrastructure sectors.
Katumba also had two secondments at Samancor Chrome supporting its General Counsel on governance, procurement and compliance management.
The strength of those relationships was highlighted when, as reported by Africa Legal at the time, Katumba was promoted to Senior Associate in May.
“The fact that leading clients have requested his return for secondments speaks volumes about the trust and confidence they place in him,” Beech said at the time.
AngloGold Ashanti has now brought that experience into its legal team full-time.
A graduate of the University of the Witwatersrand, Katumba joined Beech Inc in July 2021. His practice developed across mining, natural resources and infrastructure, encompassing environmental, commercial, regulatory, health and safety matters alongside litigation before courts including the Supreme Court of Appeal. The Legal 500 recognised him as a key member of his former firm’s mining team.
AngloGold Ashanti operates mining assets spanning 10 countries across four continents, including operations in Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Guinea, and Egypt. Discussing its workforce yesterday, AngloGold Ashanti said its global success “is driven by the simple truth that our people are at the heart of everything we do” and that it is “dedicated to creating a culture where everyone feels a true sense of belonging, an environment where you can be recognized, be valued, and be known for who you are and what you bring to the team.”
Now Katumba joins that team, bringing skills honed through his years at Beech Inc. “I will forever be grateful for everyone who has been a part of my journey thus far,” Katumba said, thanking clients, opponents, friends and family for their support. “I am excited for the next chapter and I look forward to what the future has in store!”
