Reflections on 2024: Challenges, Resilience, and Hope

To borrow a phrase from the late Queen Elizabeth II, 2024 has been an “annus horribilis” for many of us in the African legal sector. At the start of the year, few of us could have anticipated the torrid and relentless business environment that was to unfold.

For Wendy and I this year brought a series of profound challenges for us personally: family health struggles, the upheaval of unplanned house moves, lost investments, and unjust attacks. It has been a time that tested not only our resilience but also our faith in humanity. Yet, amidst the turmoil, we found hope, strength, and unwavering support from those who stood by us.

So often, people only see the polished end of the founder’s journey: the successful sale, the accolades, the brand, and its value. What they don’t see are the struggles, the constant battles, the years of putting life on hold. For us, these experiences became chapters in a book we’d half-jokingly imagined writing one day, chapters with titles only we would understand, capturing the highs, lows, and utterly absurd moments along the way. Some chapters this year included contributions we could never have foreseen- our book now feels worthy of a Netflix drama.

How many of us have stumbled through 2024, battling stress that at times felt unbearable? Often, the pressure business owners face remains invisible to others. Decisions made under immense strain are rarely understood or appreciated and other people’s actions are often driven by their own hardships and stress. Forgiveness, though not always easy, is a powerful gift, available to all who choose to embrace it.

We are acutely aware that 2024 has been equally challenging for many of our clients and partners. Global instability, economic pressures, currency crashes and multiple elections have created a tough environment for any business in Africa to transact. These struggles demanded that we work together, embracing honesty, compromise, and understanding to find a way forward.

2025 holds the promise of bridging divides, fostering inclusivity, and driving change that aligns with our shared values. We can lean into the future with hope—hope for deeper relationships, more compassionate communities, and a world that continues to learn and adapt and work together for the common good. The Africa Legal community is a powerful one filled with immense talent, kindness, determination and huge potential and we are grateful that we continue to be the go to platform to share your successes.

As 2024 draws to a close, we choose to end the year on our own terms:

  • Less hustle, more healing.

  • Less pressure, more peace.

  • Less rushing, more resting. (Vex King)

Wishing you all a very happy, healthy, and supportive 2025.
