Mazera supports her company’s energy and construction businesses in various countries in Africa including Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda and Tanzania.
“My work entails providing legal advice on all aspects of Great Lake Africa’s energy and construction businesses.”
This involves screening investment opportunities in the energy and construction sectors, carrying out pre-investment due diligence, and the preparation and negotiation of transaction and/or project agreements, and advising on various financing arrangements.
The earlier years of Mazera’s legal career were at Anjarwalla & Khanna Advocates (A&K) where she did her pupillage and was retained as an Associate.
“Working at A&K provided me with a very solid foundation that has served me well over the years.
“It is where I got my attention to detail, work ethic, technical expertise and the art of handling of clients.”
A&K was also where she was exposed to handling complex and novel matters especially in transactions and projects that were deemed to be “firsts” for Kenya in projects and finance.
After a while, Mazera decided to take some time to focus on family life, but still stayed busy by taking up some exciting consulting opportunities that came her way.
“I took a five-year break to have my daughter and during this time, just to keep my mind sharp, I used to consult for various law firms that found themselves having work but not the technical capacity.”
Mazera admits that she wasn’t looking for a new role when she took on her new current job. But undeniably, her extensive experience and expertise always made companies come knocking.
“I had just resigned from my job as a Partner at MMC and wanted to unwind, having achieved all the goals that had been set and I set for myself when I joined the firm.”
Born and raised in the coastal town of Mombasa, Kenya, Mazera later moved to Nairobi for boarding school and her university degree. She obtained her LL.B from the University of Nairobi and a Post Graduate Diploma in Law at the Kenya School of Law.
Her passion and excellence in her work has led her to be a multiple award-winning lawyer. Described as “impressive” and praised for “demonstrating skill, innovation and an awareness of community impact”, she was named the Private Practice Rising Star at the 2019 African Legal Awards in Johannesburg and was recognised for leading a team of 45 lawyers and staff in undertaking a know-your-customer exercise on behalf of Safaricom, the leading telecommunications company in East Africa.
She has also been recognised by several legal directories including IFLR1000 where she has been ranked as a “Highly Regarded Lawyer” in Energy, Banking, Mergers & Acquisitions, Islamic Finance and Real Estate from 2019 – 2021 and as a “Rising Star” from 2016 – 2018.
In her downtime, you'll find Mazera travelling and exploring new activities like snorkeling, water tubing and kayaking.
