Arbitra bolsters energy arbitrator offering

Arbitra, a leading international arbitration and mediation service provider, celebrated its third birthday in July and took the opportunity to announce the addition of Ana Stanič to its roster of arbitrators and mediators, and the transition of Lara Hammoud to full independence.

Hammoud is a globally sought-after arbitrator, recognised for her extensive expertise in international arbitration and energy disputes. She decided to transition to full independence after a decade at the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) as associate general counsel.

In 2024, Hammoud was recognised among the “Most In Demand Arbitrators” UAE, by Who’s Who Legal, Arbitration and Chambers & Partners. A valued member of Arbitra since 2022, Hammoud’s recent move to independence marks a significant milestone in her career, allowing her to focus wholly on sitting as an arbitrator.

“Lara’s dedication, expertise, and passion for arbitration have been evident throughout her tenure with us, and we are confident that this next chapter will allow Lara to flourish as an independent neutral,” said Arbitra’s CEO, Owen Lawrence.

“I have had the privilege to develop my practice as arbitrator whilst working as corporate counsel in one of the world’s largest energy companies (ADNOC),” Hammoud said. “After a decade with ADNOC, I have decided to dedicate myself fully to my arbitration practice. With my experience as corporate counsel as well as my earlier roles in my career within arbitral institutions and private practice, I have built up a deep understanding of the needs of the parties and a great knowledge of arbitration proceedings.”

Stanič joins Arbitra with over two decades of distinguished experience in international arbitration, specialising in energy law, investment arbitration, and public international law. She is a renowned member of the PCA in the Hague and has been nominated by the EU Commission as an arbitrator and sustainability expert for trade disputes with third countries.

Recognised as one of the top UK Energy and Natural Resource legal minds by Chambers & Partners in 2024, Ana has advised sovereign states, multinational corporations, and international organisations on complex energy transactions and regulatory matters.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ana Stanic to Arbitra,” said Lawrence. “Her exceptional skills and vast experience in international arbitration will undoubtedly enhance our service offerings and provide law firms and general counsel with unparalleled expertise in resolving complex disputes.”

Hammoud and Stanič both work extensively across the Middle East and North Africa regions, and while London has become a pre-eminent international dispute resolution centre, Lawrence emphasised that, “Since its inception, Arbitra has actively lobbied for the inclusion of arbitrators familiar with local commercial practices and cultures in tribunals involving African disputes. We believe that disputes in unfamiliar regions shouldn’t be decided by arbitrators with no connection to or experience in those areas. While many firms and lawyers advocate for diversity, we urge the community to practise what they preach. All members of Arbitra are encouraged to consider local expertise when suggesting chairpersons.”

Founded with 18 members committed to excellence in arbitration and mediation, Arbitra now has 34 members. Lawrence says the firm is committed to “advancing dispute resolution while upholding the highest standards of professionalism and innovation”.
