Africa Legal CEO Named as Finalist for British Ex-Forces Award

Africa Legal founder and Chief Executive Scott Cowan has been named as a finalist in the category Entrepreneur of the Year in the 2020 British Ex-Forces in Business Awards.

The finalists were chosen from more than 500 nominations and all demonstrated outstanding business achievements enabled by military-gained skills and values.

Scott served in the Royal Air Force for four years from 1990 to 1994 as a flight controller. He went on to a career in legal recruitment before starting his own business.

In April 2018, with his partner Wendy Bampton, Scott launched Africa Legal with the goal of connecting lawyers and enabling access to justice across Africa. One of his key drivers was to tell the stories of African success in the legal community and to promote African legal professionals on the global stage.

He was subsequently appointed to the Africa Advisory Board of the global charity Save the Children.

The recent shortlisting caught him by surprise but he said it was an enormous honour to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award.

“The four years I spent in the Royal Air Force taught me what it takes to achieve a goal. I learned how discipline, tenacity, meticulous planning and being able to cope with every eventuality underpins every success for an entrepreneur. There have been many times that I have drawn on the experiences of those four years to navigate through the tough times of starting a new business.

The winners of the awards will be announced on October 20 in London at a celebration of military veterans in second careers.
