And the winner is…

There was a loud buzz of excitement in Johannesburg on Friday, 2 September when the annual African Legal Awards took place in person again after a two-year hiatus.

Overjoyed to have survived the chaos of Covid and forged ahead strongly, the legal fraternity took delight in celebrating their wins at the 2022 African Legal Awards. The awards are hosted by Law.com in partnership with Africa Legal.

The big award of the night – African Law Firm of the Year: Mid-Large Sized Practice – went to Webber Wentzel which garnered a precedent-setting seven prizes on the night. They also took home trophies for Environment, Energy & Natural Resources Team of the Year: Mid-Large Sized Practice; Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team of the Year: Mid-Sized Practice; ESG Initiative of the year; M&A Team of the Year; Private Equity Team of the Year; and Private Practice Most Promising Newcomer of the year (Alyssa Smith). The firm also received Highly Commended mentions in five other categories.

ALN Kenya | Anjarwalla & Khanna were thrilled to take home two awards – Best Use of Technology and Partner of the Year: Mid-Large Sized Practice which went to Managing Partner Karim S. Anjarwalla.

Alternative Service Provider of the Year went to Herbert Smith Freehills, while Lopes Attorneys picked up the award for Specialist Law Firm of the Year. Samallie Kiyingi of African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) was awarded the prize for General Counsel of the Year.

The African Legal Awards charity partner, Save the Children, supports the Future Generations Award, which this year went to Baker McKenzie.

“This is an award that looks at what a law firm has done to support the legal rights of vulnerable children. We are delighted and grateful to everyone who has taken this initiative into their hearts to work tirelessly to help African children, who are among the world’s most impoverished and vulnerable people,” said Africa Legal Chief Executive Scott Cowan, who was previously a member of the African advisory board for Save the Children.

A Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Professor Michael Katz, Chairperson of ENSafrica.
