AfCFTA Insights Report

To mark the culmination of nine months of a collaboration to produce content, we are delighted to release a downloadable compilation of expert insights from leading African law firm, Webber Wentzel. This collaboration is specifically focussed on the issues around the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Through a selection of interviews, podcasts, infographics and insights, this report offers an introduction to the rapidly changing intra-African trading environment while also offering a deeper-dive into key topics.

Content includes:

*Africa, Innovation and the AfCFTA - In this kick-off conversation, Christo Els, Webber Wentzel's Senior Partner, gives Africa Legal’s Tom Pearson his impressions of how the AfCFTA will change the way Africans do business.

*Africa Needs to Help Africa - AfCFTA has the potential to drive economic development and radically improve the welfare and lives of millions of people yet there remains much more to be done from a legal and regulatory perspective to ensure the deal has maximum impact, according to Daryl Dingley, a partner at Webber Wentzel.

*Creating the Right Ecosystem - AfCFTA is set to forever change the commercial and trade landscape across Africa by cutting red tape, reducing trade tariffs, creating jobs and enhancing regional cooperation by creating the world’s largest free trade zone.

*Brexit - Next Steps for Africa - In this interview, we speak to Daryl Dingley, partner at Webber Wentzel to get to the heart of the opportunities and challenges for African countries brought about by new bi-lateral trade agreements with the UK in the Brexit era.

*Understanding Africa’s Trade-Web - Africa is home to the oldest customs union in the world—the Southern African Customs Union (SACU)—founded at the start of the 20th century and boosting trade between Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Namibia and South Africa.

*Keeping Investments Safe - Investment protection under the new parameters set by AfCFTA is the subject of a high level podcast discussion produced by Webber Wentzel.

*Disputes: Intra-African Investment - In the second of two podcasts, hosted by Webber Wentzel, lawyers Vlad Movshovich (Webber Wentzel), Tunde Fagbohunlu (Aluko and Oyebode) and Roland Ziadé (Linklaters) discuss intra-African investment and what protocols are needed for disputes.

Yael Shafrir, Head of Alliances and Networks at Webber Wentzel comments;

‘’There is rarely the opportunity to showcase expert insight on a sector agnostic and Pan African topic of such importance to the continent and beyond. We are very pleased to share this collation with you.’’
