Solar energy company Sun King shines brighter by adding Godson Iwuozo as Legal Manager

Sun King is the world’s leading off-grid solar company, bringing power to more than 24 million homes in 46 countries over the past 15 years. Now they’ve upgraded their legal capacity with the hiring of talented Nigerian lawyer Godson Iwuozo

Innovative solar energy company Sun King has upgraded its legal capacity by bringing in talented Nigerian project finance, energy, and infrastructure lawyer Godson Iwuozo this week as its new Legal Manager, West and Central Africa.

Godson joins Sun King from leading Nigerian law firm Udo Udoma & Belo-Osagie (UUBO), where he rose from trainee attorney in January 2020 to become a senior associate. During his time at UUBO, Godson was named an IFLR Recommended Lawyer (Project Finance), and a Legal500 Recommended Lawyer (Energy & Infrastructure). He was also included in the World IP Review Leaders 2024 Guide.

“I walked into UUBO as a trainee, unsure of the journey ahead but determined to make something of it,” shared Godson on social media as he farewelled UUBO, a firm he called not just his workplace, but his first love in the practice of law.

“Within five years, I rose to the rank of Senior Associate, entrusted with responsibilities that stretched me, challenged me, and ultimately transformed me. That journey remains one of the greatest honours of my life,” said Godson, thanking the UUBO partners for the mentorship and opportunities that have shaped him as a young lawyer. “As I prepare for this next chapter, I carry forward the lessons, the friendships, and the spirit of excellence that UUBO has written into me.”

Sun King is leading a transformation in how electricity is provided across Africa and Asia, where 1.8 billion people still lack access to a reliable electrical grid. It designs, distributes, installs, and finances solar energy solutions for those consumers who cannot reliably access or afford traditional electrical grid connections.

The world’s leading off-grid solar energy company, Sun King boasts cutting edge product design, affordable financing, and an installation model that has already provided over 110 million people with access to energy across Africa and Asia.

“Sun King is leading a global transformation in the way we provide electricity to consumers in Africa and Asia,” said Sun King co-founder Anish Thakkar after the company announced it had raised $260 million in Series D funding in 2022.

The company is now adding 300,000 new solar connections per month across more than forty countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

As Legal Manager for West and Central Africa at Sun King, Godson will lead legal strategy and compliance across multiple jurisdictions, supporting commercial operations, regulatory matters, contract management, and risk mitigation.

“I work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure legal alignment with business goals, while navigating the diverse legal landscapes of the region,” he shared.
