Helping build a modern Angola

CMS LBR, part of the international CMS stable, recently advised Unicargas on the multi-million dollar renewal of the Management and Operation Concession Contract for the Port of Luanda Multipurpose Terminal with the Luanda Port Authority.

CMS LBR’s support also covered the joint venture agreements signed between Unicargas and Abu Dhabi Ports Group (ADP) regarding the Multipurpose Terminal, Unicargas’s logistics, road transport and freight forwarding activities, and the operation of the Catumbela Air Cargo Terminal.

According to the speeches made by the Minister of Transport and the ADP representative during the ceremony to sign the legal instruments, ADP is expected to invest $251 million, in the initial phase, for the modernisation of the multipurpose terminal, with the investment potentially reaching $410 million by the end of the concession period.

The port of Luanda currently handles more than 76% of the country's container and general cargo volumes.

Partner Luís Borba Rodrigues, based in Angola, led the CMS LBR team which also included Nuno Mansilha, partner at CMS Portugal.

“It’s an honour to have advised Unicargas on this operation of great importance for the Angolan economy. It’s another important step that the country is taking towards modernising and opening up its economy,” said Luís Borba Rodrigues. He sees this as an opportunity to speed up the process of modernising and expanding the port of Luanda and its logistics infrastructure, thereby transforming Angola into a key player on the global maritime trade scene.
