Bowmans bolsters East African tax capabilities with arrival of Terry Muli as Head of Transfer Pricing
Leading pan-African corporate law firm Bowmans traces its roots to 1885, but the firm is firmly focused on the future. It has continued its recent additions of key senior lawyers with this week’s announcement that business and tax advisor Terry Muli has joined its Nairobi office as Head of Transfer Pricing
The specialised expertise that business and tax advisor Terry Muli brings will be invaluable to leading pan-African firm Bowmans’ clients navigating an increasingly complex tax environment, says Paras Shah, managing partner of Bowmans in Kenya.
“I am very pleased to welcome Terry to the firm… Our enhanced Tax Practice will work closely with our Transfer Pricing experts in our offices across Africa, offering specialist cross-border services to our clients operating throughout the continent.”
A University of Nairobi graduate who spent most of the past decade working for KMPG across East Africa, rising from associate to Senior Manager, Terry will be based in Nairobi, one of nine Bowmans offices spanning six African nations.
During her time at KPMG, Terry says she played a pivotal pivotal role in the transformation of the firm’s transfer pricing services offering, championing the specialisation and establishment of a dedicated International Tax and Transfer Pricing service line, consolidating expertise, structuring delivery processes, and resulting in a focused, high-performing unit offering services across East Africa.
She starts at Bowmans this week, after a year working as an independent International Tax & Transfer Pricing Consultant. Bowmans says Terry’s appointment comes at a time of growing client demand for specialised international tax and transfer pricing support services, driven by the increasing complexity of Kenya’s tax laws, especially in respect of cross border-related party transactions.
The Kenya Revenue Authority’s (KRA) International Tax Office has been intensifying audit scrutiny of multinationals, with transfer pricing issues now featuring in virtually every significant tax audit. This follows enhanced transfer pricing regulations, the introduction of country-by-country reporting obligations, Base Erosion and Profit Shifting adoption by Kenya, and the Advance Pricing Agreements Regulations.
Joining Bowmans’ existing Tax Practice, co-headed by Alex Mathini, partner and head of Tax Advisory, and Andrew Oduor, partner and head of Tax Disputes, Terry will lead this area of focus as an international tax and transfer pricing specialist with significant experience gained while advising multinational entities across East Africa.
“I bring a unique blend of technical expertise and policy insight to support both private and public stakeholders in navigating complex and evolving tax landscapes,” shared Terry, who designs solutions to optimise cross-border transactions, ensure compliance with evolving global standards, and align with business objectives.
“Whether it is navigating intricate tax systems or providing strategic restructuring advice, my goal is to deliver impactful outcomes for clients across Africa and beyond.”
Terry’s arrival as Head of Transfer Pricing for Bowmans in Kenya further strengthens the pan-African firm’s leadership and senior expertise, after adding transactional expert Olwethu Gusha as a new partner and Lena Mangando (former Head of Legal at the Independent Power Producer Office) as an executive in its projects, energy and infrastructure practice in Johannesburg last month, appointing tech lawyer and entrepreneur Robbie Coehlo as a partner in Cape Town earlier this year, and telecoms expert Justin Ramages as a partner in its Johannesburg office in December.
