The lawyer as rule-of-law activist

This year the Cyrus R Vance Center for International Justice celebrates its twentieth anniversary and is highlighting the organisation with a three-day program in Johannesburg in mid-October.

The theme of the event is “The lawyer as rule-of-law activist: Activating the next generation”. This three-day event from 11 to 13 October will recognise more than two decades of success among the Vance Center’s legal networks, beginning in South Africa and expanding to support pro bono practice and a more diverse, inclusive legal profession in sub-Saharan Africa.

The event will include distinguished keynote speakers from the South African and international legal fields, in-depth panel discussions on key issues for African legal practitioners, in-person visits to law firms and legal institutions, networking, and much more.

Panel discussions will look at the role of the private sector and the legal profession in securing the rule of law and combatting corruption, the challenges and prospects of pro bono practice in Africa, advancing opportunities for African women in the legal profession, and the role of an organised Bar as a bulwark for a democratic and pluralist society.

The Vance Center advances global justice by engaging lawyers across borders to support civil society and an ethically active legal profession. They fulfil their mission through two approaches:

  • By providing legal representation to civil society organisations, as well as international human rights bodies, around the world, in partnership with leading law firms on a pro bono basis.
  • By building the capacity of the legal profession in pro bono practice ethics, and diversity by engaging law firms, bar associations, law schools, and pro bono clearinghouses with innovative initiatives.
