A roadmap to TaxADR in Nigeria roundtable to be held in person and online next week

Building off recent National Policy on ADR and tax harmonisation in Nigeria, next week a TaxADR Roundtable event of panel discussions and practical workshops will be held in Abuja on 25-26 June.

With Nigeria having growing economic complexity alongside one of the largest economies in Africa, unresolved tax disputes pose significant challenges to revenue generation and investor confidence, says TaxADR, an educational and policy-driven initiative with a mission to explore alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in tax matters.

So next week on 25-26 June, TaxADR will - in collaboration with and support from Nigeria’s Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs - present the TaxADR Roundtable event “Unlocking Revenue and Strengthening Dispute Resolution: A Roadmap to Tax ADR in Nigeria”.

In February, the Federal Executive Council officially approved the National Policy on Arbitration and Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) for 2024–2028. Coupled with the Nigerian Senate in late May adopting the harmonised versions of four tax reform bills, this provides a timely opportunity to integrate ADR into tax administration.

Next week’s Roundtable is a hybrid in-person and online event to be held across two days at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja, hosted by Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi SAN, and chaired by Dr. Zaccheus Adedeji, the Chairman of FIRS. It aims to:

  • Raise Awareness: advocate for the inclusion of a robust ADR framework in Nigeria's tax system, aligned with recent policy developments;

  • Engage Stakeholders: facilitate high-level dialogue among government officials, tax administrators, business leaders, tax experts, and international ADR practitioners; and

  • Develop Policy: gather insights through keynote presentations, panel discussions, focused groups, and training sessions to draft a White Paper recommending actionable steps for implementing an effective tax ADR policy in Nigeria.

Part of the first day will be open to the public, with keynote addresses then panel discussions featuring notable government officials, tax experts, and business leaders, exploring the practical implementation of tax ADR in Nigeria. Following the free public sessions, there will be focused group sessions with targeted stakeholders in the evening, to explore specific aspects of tax ADR policy, then during the second day there will be practical training workshops (CPD Accredited).

Fees are ₦100,000 (in-person), or ₦50,000 (virtual), with 50% discounts with code YPRO50 (available to students, civil servants, govt. officials & young professionals of less than 7 years’ experience), or 20% off early bird until 20 June (code EB20), and group rates available.
