The partnership between Africa Legal and the Mining Indaba has been instrumental in shaping Africa Legal’s strategic direction for the mining GC community, and after five years of successful collaboration the distinguished General Counsel Forum, spearheaded by Africa Legal, will become an independent brand. This shift in approach reflects Africa Legal’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve and meeting the evolving needs of the mining legal community in an ever-changing business landscape.
Kathryn Barnard, Product Director of Investing in African Mining Indaba, expressed her full support for this new era of the General Counsel Forum. “The transition of Africa Legal to independently run the General Counsel Forum marks a significant shift in the event’s trajectory after a successful five-year partnership,” she said, sharing her excitement at the move. “This development is expected to offer a larger platform for all attendees and drive future success under the continued leadership of Africa Legal.”
The General Counsel Forum, to be held at UCT Graduate Business School | Protea Hotel by Marriott® Cape Town Waterfront Breakwater Lodge on Wednesday 5 February 2025, will bring together top legal professionals in the mining and extractives industry to address the pressing legal issues facing lawyers in Africa. The event will offer networking opportunities and discussions on the evolving expectations placed on mining general counsel by stakeholders, with a focus on regional and global trends and the ever evolving role of the GC.
"Our vision for the General Counsel Forum is centered around enhancing engagement and service for our community, offering a wider range of touch points and connections,” explained Wendy Bampton, Co-Founder and COO, Africa Legal. “This shift in approach will help us better connect with our target audience and adapt to their changing needs and expectations. By focusing on improving interaction throughout the year and providing a wider range of services, we aim to strengthen our position as a valuable resource in the legal industry."
The role of the mining GC is a complex one involving multiple layers, intricacies and unique regulations, and the GC Forum aims to provide a valuable platform for sharing experiences, tips, and support while fostering a collaborative environment for professional growth and networking.
