A position for a Legal Advisor has become available. The successful candidate will be responsible for supporting the delivery of the legal risk management function within the business and conducting legal risk assessments in accordance with the legal risk framework.
The role will report to the Company Secretary and is integral to the effective and efficient functioning of the Legal and Secretariat Business Unit. Being in the sport of cricket, the role requires the ability and willingness to travel, work long hours, over weekends and public holidays where necessary.
The more important criteria for the appointment are set out below and although not exhaustive, would serve as a guideline in assessing a prospective candidate.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key performance areas include but are not limited to the following:
Administering and managing of commercial drafting, reviewing, negotiating and risk assessment on contracts;
Assisting with organizational contract development and management;
Drafting and/or vetting and/or reviewing legal agreements and ensuring that contracts are appropriate both legally and meet commercial needs; and
Interfacing with external providers and suppliers regarding adequacy of contracting.
Assisting the Company Secretary in developing and implementing a strategy for the Company Secretariat function to support the organisation in line with applicable legislation and best practice; and
Providing corporate governance advice to the Board of Directors and their sub-committees.
Providing necessary legal advice on whether action should be instituted / a matter should be defended;
Negotiating settlements where possible with counterparties; and
Litigation management and liaison with external attorneys.
Analysing and providing legal opinion in respect of legislative and regulatory requirements related to the business of the organisation;
Conducting regulatory scanning and compile regulatory updates with impact assessments of legislation for each business unit;
Monitoring compliance with laws, regulations and internal policies;
Ensuring that all deadlines concerning regulatory compliance are met;
Assisting with detecting, handling and managing of relevant data breaches; and
Monitoring new and/or amendments to existing, laws and regulations and put a plan into place for implementation, or for the mitigation of associated risks.
Performing such additional functions including ad hoc projects as may be instructed by the Company Secretary from time to time.
Desired Experience & Qualification
The following are essential requirements pertaining to the candidate’s skills, qualifications and experience:
An LLB or relevant bachelors’ degree in Law or a similar qualification, postgraduate degree will be advantageous;
A minimum of 4 years' working experience in a legal role with solid experience in drafting of legal agreements and providing legal advice, with sports exposure being an advantage;
A strong commercial law background, Legislative, Regulatory and Commercial Law knowledge;
Knowledge of the South African legislative landscape;
Knowledge of drafting legal contracts and policies;
Corporate Governance knowledge;
Legal writing skills;
Legal research skills;
Legal advisory and interpretation; and
Computer literate with proficiency in MS Office suite – Word, Excel, Power Point, Internet, Publisher.

Appreciation for deadlines, discrete and able to uphold confidentiality;
Ability to multi-task and strong decision-making ability;

Package & Remuneration
Short listed candidates will undergo interviews and possible additional assessments. In making the final selection, consideration will be given to the Employment Equity objectives of Cricket South Africa (NPC).
