We are recruiting for an excellent opportunity for a Head of Goverance with extensive Financial Services experience.
Duties & Responsibilities
The Governance head is part of a team that is responsible for safeguarding the business reputation by facilitating the process by which business follows legislative guidelines.
The incumbent acts in an advisory capacity to Senior Management on a variety of compliance, risk and legal matters, including those related to implementation of compliance projects, direct liaison with group compliance as well as regulatory and industry bodies. Implementation of risk related projects and liaison with Group risk as well as the preparation or facilitation of strategic, procurement and partnership contracts.
Areas of responsibility may include but are not limited to
First line compliance for Insure, working closely with Group compliance.
Maintain and promote a compliance strategy to ensure that business stakeholders receive optimal compliance support.
Implement Group Compliance policies.
Provide and maintain a consolidated view of the identified compliance risks and controls.
Ensure timeous reporting of compliance risks and incidents.
First line risk for Insure, working closely with Group risk management.
Report on an ongoing basis to senior management on compliance and risk-related issues.
Advise and provide guidance to senior management on systems, policies, processes and controls implemented to assist with compliance and risk mitigation.
Assist with the promotion of a culture of compliance and sound risk management and awareness by coordinating and implementing compliance and risk projects.
Assist with the compilation of responses pertaining to queries received from the various regulators.
Co-ordinate all strategic legal related matters – including supplier contracting, strategic contracts and partnerships.
Responsible for the liaison with internal and outside legal counsel.
Participation in industry forums and bodies to ensure we play a role in shaping the future of the industry.
Meeting the competence and experience requirements to be registered as a Compliance Officer with the Financial Services Board – advantageous.
Interpretation of legislation.
Ability to convert business requirements into contractual clauses.
Ability to translate legislative requirements into technical specification of respective products.
Ability to draft documents aligned to legislative requirements in respect of all related business documentation.

Short term insurance experience is ideal but not essential.
Financial Services experience is essential.
Desired Experience & Qualification
A law degree is preferable (i.e. LLB or B.Proc)
A postgraduate law degree – advantageous
Compliance qualification ( Diploma in Compliance Management would be advantageous) – alternatively a Risk related qualification
Admitted attorney or advocate in South Africa – advantageous
Knowledge of the Insurance Act, Code of Insurance Practice and the FAIS Act Minimum Experience:
Min 5-10 years legal or compliance experience.
Min 5 years legal and compliance management experience in the insurance industry.
