New Style Legal Education Emerges as UCT Law@work and Africa Legal Team Up
Africa Legal and the University of Cape Town’s Law@work programme have formed a partnership to bring world class legal education to students across Africa by using advances in technology.
A University of Cape Town certificate will be now be achievable and accessible to learners in remote and rural locations via the Africa Legal platform.
The cost of the courses have been contained to make them affordable.
UCT’s Law@work Director Irena Wasserfall said the programme had made substantial headway in delivering continuing legal education in South Africa and taking courses online, via a partnership with Africa Legal, was the next logical step.

Meet your course instructor
James Leach
Lecturer, Commercial Law Department, Faculty of Law
James graduated from the University of Cape Town with a LLB in 2012 and a Master of Law in Commercial Law (LLM) with distinction in 2013, and completed a LLM in Shipping Law in 2014.
He became a lecturer in the Faculty of Law’s Commercial Law Department. James has been the primary developer and course convenor of the Postgraduate Diploma in Regulatory Compliance Management at the UCT Faculty of Law and has been running a short course in compliance management on behalf of UCT Law@work and Get Smarter since 2015. Outside of compliance management, his interest lies in theories of corporate legal regulation, cryptocurrencies and crypto-banking, corporate governance and financial aspects of corporate financing structures.
